In our ongoing partnership with Reseda’s Bertrand Elementary School, The Discovery House has given $5,000 to assist in technology upgrades on campus. This is the third in a series of contributions made to the school in an effort to support students in their ability to understand and grow in a global society. The previous contributions helped to provide computers and to develop a literacy program.
“We know that these students, even as young as they are, will be communicating and working in a world that we cannot even comprehend because of the rapid advances in technology,” said Tom Whiting, co-founder and executive director of The Discovery House. “We are happy to do our part in assisting them in their learning process.”
The Discovery House is committed to the concept of service not only in the community at large, but also in the recovery community. By taking leadership in the business community by working on collaborative efforts, The Discovery House promotes a spirit of cooperation and mutual support. In terms of The Discovery House’s drug and alcohol addiction treatment program, community service becomes a key element in recovery.
Community Service Strengthens Recovery
When clients begin their treatment programs at The Discovery House, our professional staff works with them to determine the best possible course of action to meet each individual’s needs. Once the clients’ physical health has stabilized, we begin to work on the emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of recovery. Eventually, this leads to the concept of service to others as a vital aspect of their programs. We encourage our clients to share their tools of recovery with others, which greatly enhances their chances of avoiding relapse. We also introduce service above self in the community, and we provide opportunities for our clients to give back by working with civic and charitable organizations. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.
