The Discovery House a Participant in Reseda Neighborhood Pride Day

Outpatient and residential clients of The Discovery House, as well as a number of staff members, participated in the event on Saturday, August 2, 2014. The Discovery House volunteers worked alongside others in the community to make improvements to properties and homes in Reseda. Volunteers painted houses, planted flowers, removed graffiti, and cleaned up yards. Those that participated were able to see the immediate outcomes of their efforts, as improvements were quickly visible. The Discovery House clients were especially happy to be a part of the day and to have the chance to give back to the community.

The Discovery House Employees Volunteer at Local Rescue Mission

The Discovery House recently participated in a community program that helps homeless families in the San Fernando Valley. The volunteers partnered with the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission to provide a hot meal to individuals in need. The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter and services for homeless individuals and families. The mission’s Family Emergency Shelter provides housing and basic needs such as food and clothing. The program works to help individuals build skills needed to move forward, through life skills classes, parenting classes, job placement, and continuing education.

The Discovery House a Sponsor of Relay for Life

The Discovery House was once again a sponsor of the annual Relay for Life of Reseda event. The relay took place Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Cleveland High School in Reseda. Volunteers from The Discovery House helped with the set-up of the event, and the treatment center was a sponsor of the fundraiser. Tom Whiting, Executive Director of the Discovery House, understands the importance of the community supporting local events like this one. “Each one of us knows someone that has been personally impacted by cancer,” Whiting said. “It is important for us to support those that are fighting cancer today, as well as honor those we have lost to this disease. We are here to offer our support in any way we can, and to let our community know we stand with them.”

The Discovery House Participates In #Sizzle! At La Pride

As part of its ongoing commitment to participation in community events, The Discovery House Drug Addiction Treatment Center recently cooperated in #Sizzle! A Carnival of Attraction, as part of Los Angeles Pride Weekend in West Hollywood. #Sizzle included music, performances, games and prizes as a way to celebrate without the use of drugs or alcohol. The Discovery House’s booth offered outreach and informational materials to promote services available for recovery from addiction and to show how its residential treatment program prepares people for successful lives of sobriety.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Volunteers at Victims of Abuse Awareness Event

The Discovery House is pleased to announce its participation in the “Victory for Victims” event. The event was a 5K walk/run and 10K river run that raised funds for victims of abuse. The race was held on April 13, 2014, at Lake Balboa Park, Encino, California.

The Discovery House to Sponsor Lawyer Continuing Education Workshop

The Discovery House is pleased to announce its upcoming continuing education workshop. The workshop provides continuing education credits to attorneys and professionals that work with individuals affected by drug and alcohol addiction and those that may struggle with addiction themselves.

The Discovery House Donates $5,00 to Bertrand Elementary School

The Discovery House is pleased to announce that it has donated $5,000 to Bertrand Elementary School for the support of its literacy program. Principal Esta Herman of Bertrand Elementary accepted the donation on behalf of the school, and she and her staff are looking forward to seeing the results from the literacy program they will implement with the funds.

The Discovery House Co-Sponsored San Fernando Valley CAMFT Event

The Discovery House was a co-sponsor of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SFV-CAMFT) event. The annual board member installation event, which took place on Jan. 19, 2014, was held at the Woodland Hills Country Club, in Woodland Hills, Calif.

The Discovery House Makes Donation to Bertrand Elementary

Bertrand school officials plan to use the funds to purchase new computers. As the use of technology becomes more common in education, it is necessary for schools like Bertrand to keep their equipment up to date. Technology in the classroom will provide students with a more engaged learning experience, and help them develop the tools to function in a society that is based on technology.

Relay for Life Sponsorship Award

Tom Whiting, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Discovery House, was proud to be given the opportunity to partner with the American Cancer Society. “Both of our organizations help individuals through recovery, whether it is recovery from a devastating disease such as cancer, or from an addiction to drugs or alcohol,” he said after the ceremony. “It is important for those in recovery to know that there are many who stand behind them and who are here to offer support.”

Relapse prevention through fellowship and service work is the goal of every alumni group. The Discovery House administration sponsored this event in the spirit of giving back to those who work so hard for others.

Relay for Life – Cancer Awareness Event Participation

As an Official Sponsor of this year’s Relay for Life, The Discovery House provided not only monetary support but hands-on set-up. Plenty needed to be done to get the event site ready for the hundreds of walkers and other supporters before the kick-off ceremony began the morning of June 8, 2013.

This is the journey at The Discovery House; to uncover the “immense blue tapestry” that lives in each one of us, one-step-at-a-time.  It is only as a community that we can grow new eyes able to see the many perspectives of who we are, our capabilities and spirituality.  We are people who struggle with addiction and we are human beings whose ‘healthy self’ can reach emotional sobriety thus improving our ability to play more successful roles  in life.

The Discovery House Hosts First Alumni Meeting

The Alumni group plans to meet regularly to continue to develop the relationships they formed during treatment. Group members have learned that staying connected to the recovery community helps with relapse prevention. One member stated, “Having a reliable support system is what helped me through treatment, and it is what is helping me continue in sobriety. I am extremely thankful for The Discovery House Alumni group, which gives me the chance to connect with others who are going through the same struggles.”

This is Rehabilitation and Recovery in action, this is how we become productive members of society. Initiative to Provide Clarity on Insurance Coverage

The Discovery House is hoping that by providing more information about coverage, more people will get help for their addiction. The Discovery House accepts all PPO plans through Cigna Health Insurance, ValueOptions, United Healthcare, and Aetna Health Insurance for both residential and outpatient care. The staff at The Discovery House works with each patient insured through these well-known providers, as well as other insurance carriers, to help them understand their benefits.

The Discovery House Announces Launch of New Website

Visitors to The Discovery House’s website will find a wealth of information about various issues connected to addiction treatment and recovery, as well as the latest methods and techniques that staff at the Discovery House use to assist residents in recovery. The site’s Discovery Blog provides additional information about a wide variety of addiction topics that are important to the public. The goal of the newly designed website is to assist those seeking help find the information they need and to encourage them to take the next steps towards recovery.
