National Substance Abuse Prevention Month

“It is easier to stay off drugs than to get off drugs” ~ Author unknown

Once a year the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Substance Abuse Prevention Month. In 2013, SAMHSA will focus on substance abuse prevention during the month of October and how prevention can create safe and healthy communities.

Nipping substance abuse in the bud, before it has a chance to blossom into the full-blown nightmare that it is, will improve an adult’s or teen’s odds of living a happier, healthier, more positive and more constructive life.

Living inside every community is someone struggling with substance abuse and attempting to fight the good fight. Maybe they hide their struggle well, but the fact remains; they need support.

National Substance Abuse Prevention Month is a great opportunity to help those in your community needing help but may be too embarrassed to come forward.

SAMHSA offers some great ideas on how to get involved.

  1. Struggling with substance abuse? Commit to abstaining and sharing the Prevention Pledge with friends, neighbors and family for support and accountability.
  2. Utilize social media such as Facebook and Twitter, to post information and facts about National Substance Abuse Prevention Month encouraging others to get involved in their communities as well
  3. Host a substance-free block party or backyard BBQ in your neighborhood this year in honor of National Substance Abuse Prevention Month
  4. Invite Neighborhood Watch captains to organize multiple events throughout the community and be sure to include local government officials
  5. Encourage co-workers to do the same in their neighborhoods

Education and awareness play a huge role in preventing drug abuse; help get the word out.
