Abuse-Deterrent Painkillers Unlikely to Deter Addicts

The Discovery House was recently featured in an article of Healthline, a web-based health and wellness publication. The article was about the prescription drug epidemic, and how it has changed and evolved over time and often contributes to addiction to heroin and other types of drugs.

Zachery Brader, an alumnus of The Discovery House, was featured in the article. Brader told his story of prescription drug abuse, which began when he suffered a severe injury as a teen. After being put on prescription opiates to manage the pain of his injury, Brader found that others were willing to pay money for his pills, and began to abuse them himself. Like many people, however, Brader’s drug abuse evolved from prescription painkiller addiction to something more. In his case it was addiction to methadone.

Brader got help at The Discovery House, where he detoxed from methadone and developed the tools to live a sober life. Dr. Walter Thomas of The Discovery House was asked by Healthline to weigh in on why prescription painkillers control so many lives. Dr. Thomas explained that addiction can happen for a number of reasons, including stress, psychiatric disorders, or even boredom. Dr. Thomas also stressed that the way to treat addiction is through programs like the 12-steps, which provide resources and tools to maintain sobriety.
