The Discovery House residential clients and staff were recently entertained at Comedy Night, held on September 21, 2014 at the Discovery Transitions Meeting Hall. The event featured comedian Mark Lundholm, and provided an enjoyable night of laughter and fun.
Laughter has been called the best medicine, and research has shown this to be true. Laughter improves the body’s oxygen intake and it increases the endorphins that are released into the brain. This results in improved mood and stress reduction, and can even boost the immune system and help relieve pain.
As the staff and clients of The Discovery House witnessed during Comedy Night, a night of relaxation and laughter can aid in the recovery process. Laughter helps take one’s mind off of the sometimes overwhelming task of recovery, and it helps individuals focus on things other than their own troubles. Those that participated in Comedy Night at The Discovery House were pleased to find that the night did calm anxiety and reduce stress, and provided them with great entertainment as well.
Comedian Mark Lundholm is no stranger to rehab centers. As someone who has been through recovery himself, Mark travels around the country speaking to various crowds of entertainers, politicians, and those going through rehabilitation. He has produced several DVDs that highlight the sometimes comical side of recovery. Mark has a talent for engaging the crowd, and for helping individuals laugh at themselves and situations they sometimes find themselves in. Mark’s DVD series “Humor in Treatment” was created to help those going through the process of recovery.
The Discovery House staff understands the importance of helping clients reduce anxiety during recovery. Because recovery can be a challenging and stressful time, the treatment providers at The Discovery House are pleased to incorporate events like Comedy Night in order to provide a much-needed rest from the demands of rehab.
